pumpkin patch: making progress

Some of my readers might remember our Great Veggie Patch Debacle, and how Jesse and I literally threw in the trowel. We decided that last Saturday it was time to give it another go, and boy did we ever. I wish I had taken a "before" picture, but I did not; so instead here is the picture from June, and you will just have to imagine that this entire mound was literally covered in tall, bushy weeds and deep-rooted rhubarb.

The future veggie garden in June (pre-weeds)

The future veggie garden as of Saturday

After clearing out all the garbage (yes, we found garbage buried under there, too) weeds, roots, bricks, rocks, plastic tarps, and branches, what we were left with was beautiful, loamy soil which we spread out and lined the edges with wood ties. The raised bed you see in the corner is the result of us deciding on the spot to create it from the bricks that were left right there and seemed appropriate.

I am trying to convince Jesse that this should be strictly a pumpkin patch (for next year) with herbs planted in the raised bed. However, he is convinced that some root vegetables and greens are in order, and he is probably right. At the very least, we will be planting some garlic this autumn.

Yes, autumn! It's right around the corner! Have you ordered your bulbs yet?

Looks great! If you go for a pumpkin patch, remember that the vines can grow up to 30 feet! We did it one year and it was crazy! We had a ton of gorgeous pumpkins, though.

I remember that spot! Great job.
If you plant pumpkins, you can plant them around the edge and train them to grow outside the bed, unless you need that room for something else. Or you can grow mini pumpkins and train them to grow up a trellis. I grew white ones one year like that.

Looks good, hopefully your garden will be bountiful
: )

Sadly, I think I've already planted all the bulbs our yard is going to get — of course, mine are flowers — because I'm a sometimes terrible gardener who forgets to water things. The butterfly bush is getting all limp and languid looking — I suppose I should get it some mulch
