crafting: fresh rosemary witch's broom

I have another Halloween craft idea for you--constructing a witch broom, or besom. (I'd love to take credit for this one, but I saw it somewhere else first--honestly can't remember where.) Traditionally, besoms are used to sweep away negative energy, and they are also used in handfasting ceremonies. We keep a broom on the outside entrances to our homes, as it is supposed to offer protection. Did you know you're not supposed to bring an old broom to a new house? It's bad luck! All Hallow's Eve is also the witch's New Year; a great time to make a new broom for your hearth. Don't feel like constructing your own? I found some beautiful brooms on Etsy, HERE.

To make your broom, or besom, you will need:

1. Do you already have some rosemary growing in your garden? If not, sprigs can be purchased at your local grocery store.
2. A small branch approximately 2-3' in length. This branch fell from a tree in a windstorm, and I was only too happy to take it home. According to lore, if you remove anything from a growing tree, you need to offer something else (like a little crystal) in return as thanks.
3. Twine for wrapping your sprigs. (I used hemp twine.) Wrap tightly!
4. A ribbon is optional! I used single faced satin ribbon, but I would recommend double faced if you have it.

I had my husband drill a hole in the top of my branch, so I could hang our besom from our bookshelves.

Have fun!

This is so cute! I have the last of my rosemary growing in a pot on my deck. I am going to see if I can make one for myself.

Thanks.
